Congratulations, Mom & Dad!
You made it through the first year of parenthood—what an amazing milestone! Some of the toughest (and most sleep-deprived) months are now behind you, and it’s time to celebrate your little one’s first birthday.
In the USA and UK, cake smashes have become a big trend for 1st birthday photo sessions. But after photographing many of these sessions over the years, I’ve learned a little truth about them that surprises a lot of parents…

But not everyone loves a cake smash… and that’s okay!
What if your baby hates that sticky, messy feeling?
If they’re not quite confident feeding themselves yet?
What if they’ve been raised on veggie purees and savoury rice cakes and just aren’t that into sweets?
(*Let’s be honest—*what if you can’t stand the mess?)
🎉 Enter: My older baby’s first birthday photoshoot! 🎉
Yes, it’s possible to have all the fun of a birthday-themed shoot—adorable outfits, balloons, giggles, the whole vibe—without a single smear of icing on your baby.
Whether your little one is shy, squeaky clean, or just not into sugar, this is the perfect mess-free alternative that still captures the joy of their big milestone. And bonus: you still get beautiful, frame-worthy photos to remember it all.
Elina’s No-Cake First Birthday Photo Shoot

Meet Elina, who marked her very first birthday with a special photo session last year.
Her parents weren’t keen on the idea of a messy cake smash, but they still wanted to celebrate the milestone in a fun and meaningful way, with one of my themed setups. So they chose this beautiful, shimmery pink theme for their baby girl.

First Birthday Photoshoot Props
But I also have a whole collection of birthday-themed props that I love to include whenever I can—those little touches that help bring each set to life and make the photos feel extra special.
In Elina’s case, we added a second setup featuring soft balloons, fluffy cotton, and a vintage-style horse for her to explore and play with. It tied everything together beautifully and gave us even more variety to capture her personality.
The result? A playful, meaningful session that celebrated not just her first birthday—but her story, her spirit, and her family’s unique style.

At Papaya Peach Photography, I love offering my little clients a selection of carefully chosen designer outfits to make their portrait sessions feel extra magical.
For her little girl’s first birthday shoot, Elina’s mama picked this soft, fluffy pink dress sprinkled with glitter—and it couldn’t have suited her more perfectly. She looked like a little fairy tale come to life.
It’s always such a joy to see how a simple outfit can highlight a child’s personality and make the moment feel even more special.

The Splash Tub Session
Elina’s mum was especially keen to include some bathtub shots—not because she needed a clean-up, but simply because they’re such a fun and adorable part of the session. And honestly, this is usually the baby’s favourite bit too! So, of course, I was more than happy to oblige.
If the idea of a traditional cake smash (and all that sugary mess) isn’t your thing, don’t worry, you’re not alone! We can still create beautiful, joy-filled first birthday memories… all the fun, none of the mess. 🎈

Noah’s No-Cake First Birthday Photo Shoot

Celebrating one whole year of Noah, with a heartfelt and fun-filled first birthday shoot with put cake.
Noah’s parents weren’t big fans of introducing sugar just yet, so they decided to skip the traditional cake smash. Instead, they opted for a classic older baby photoshoot to celebrate his first birthday in a way that felt right for them.
For Noah’s session, they chose a fun dinosaur-themed bath setup paired with a playful jungle safari backdrop—perfect for their little explorer and full of personality!
