Gender Reveal Photography
When Ankur and Sandy reached out to me to photograph their gender reveal, I could feel their excitement even over the phone. They were expecting their first baby, and every word they spoke was filled with anticipation and joy. The day of the shoot, I arrived to see them holding hands, hearts racing, eyes sparkling with curiosity about the little secret they were about to share.
What is gender reveal photography?
A gender reveal photoshoot is more than just a picture-perfect moment—it’s a celebration of anticipation, joy, and the little mystery waiting to be unveiled. These photoshoots capture the excitement of expecting parents as they prepare to share whether their baby will be a boy, a girl, or sometimes, in more creative reveals, something beyond traditional binaries.
How it works:
- Pick a theme or color—usually pink for a girl, blue for a boy, or a neutral one.
- Choose a way to reveal it: balloons, confetti, colored smoke, or even a cake with the inside colored.
- Take photos of everyone’s reactions—parents, siblings, and grandparents. These are usually the best shots!
What’s included in a gender reveal photography session?
Maternity and Couple Portraits
Your session takes place in our cozy photography studio here in Milton Keynes, where we’ll start by capturing beautiful portraits of you and your partner—bump included!
We know that professional photos of you together can be rare, so this is a special opportunity to create lasting memories as a couple. Both relaxed, candid shots and thoughtfully posed images will capture the joy and excitement you feel as you look forward to welcoming your baby.
We’ll also make sure your baby bump takes center stage in the photos, giving you a mini maternity shoot and your little one’s very first “photoshoot” moment!
What happens during a gender reveal photoshoot?
You’ll come to your gender reveal photography session with the gender of your baby written on a piece of paper and hidden in an envelope. You will have received this from your health practitioner at your latest ultrasound pregnancy scan, and, naturally, neither of you will know what’s written inside.
When you arrive, that envelope will be opened by us in private, and we will then prepare the correct coloured confetti (pink for a girl, blue for a boy) and place this within our ivory-coloured umbrella, which we’ll use as a prop in the gender reveal photoshoot.
1. The Classic Smoke Bomb Photo Shoot
The Reveal: Picture this: a stunning outdoor setting, a happy couple, and vibrant plumes of pink or blue smoke erupting around them. Parents-to-be light color-coded smoke bombs, creating a magical backdrop for incredible photos and videos.
Why it’s great: This idea delivers dramatic, colorful, and truly stunning visuals perfect for social media announcements and cherished keepsakes.
Best for: Outdoor gender reveals, especially with a professional photographer to capture every vibrant puff.
2. “What’s in the Box?” Balloon Release
The Reveal: A timeless and touching reveal! A large, beautifully decorated cardboard box conceals a secret: a bundle of helium-filled pink or blue balloons. When the lid is lifted, the balloons majestically float into the sky, announcing your baby’s gender.

Why it’s great: A classic, simple, and visually beautiful reveal, perfect for both grand gatherings and intimate family moments.
After the reveal:
This is usually when everyone asks: “Have you announced it yet?”
3. Color-Changing Drink or Cake Delight
The Reveal (Drink): For a clever, interactive twist, parents-to-be can pour a clear or neutral liquid into a special glass containing a hidden color-changing ingredient (like a discreet food coloring drop). The drink instantly transforms to pink or blue!
The Reveal (Cake): Another sweet option is the moment of cutting into a cake or cupcake to discover the vibrant pink or blue filling or sprinkles inside.
Why it’s great: A cake is a party essential, and the drink reveal adds a clever, memorable surprise that’s easily shared.
4. Painted Handprints on the Bump
The Reveal: This is a wonderfully personal and tender moment. The parents (or excited older siblings) dip their hands into a hidden bowl of pink or blue paint and gently place their handprints on the expectant parent’s baby bump, revealing the color.
Why it’s great: A very intimate, emotional, and memorable moment focused on the growing family connection.
