Newborn and Sibling Photoshoot Ideas

Newborn and Sibling Photoshoot

One of my absolute favourite things to photograph during newborn sessions is sibling shots—the most frequent request at my newborn studio in Milton Keynes.

Yes, it can be a bit tricky getting a newborn and their big brother or sister to cooperate, but the little moments and emotions you capture make it so worth it.

Having had kids myself, I know just how unpredictable (and sometimes uncooperative!) they can be. So I’ve picked up a few simple tips over time that really help make these sessions fun and relaxed for everyone.

Preparing for your newborn and sibling photography session

With over a decade of experience, I have photographed countless families and witnessed a wide range of reactions—especially during newborn and sibling photoshoots.

I’ve found that when parents repeatedly prompt their children with phrases like “Smile,” “Be good,” or “Listen to the photographer,” it can sometimes have the opposite effect. The more often children hear these instructions, the less inclined they may be to cooperate.

A gentler, more relaxed approach tends to work best. Bringing along a few of the siblings’ favourite toys or books can help create a sense of comfort and familiarity. Snacks are also a wonderful idea—encourage parents to pack a few favourite treats, which can serve as a little motivation when needed.

I also encourage parents to keep their expectations relaxed and not set them too high—especially when it comes to sibling cooperation. Young children can be unpredictable, and it’s completely normal if they’re not immediately engaged or don’t follow directions.

If a sibling isn’t in the mood to participate, there’s no need to feel upset or disappointed. These moments are part of working with little ones, and I always allow space for breaks, play, and a more natural flow. Often, the most genuine and heartwarming images come when children are simply being themselves.

What newborns wear for sibling photos?

arents don’t need to bring anything for the baby. I provide everything needed for the session. Sometimes I’ll use wraps, and other times outfits—it all depends on the baby’s mood and what keeps them most comfortable.

For sibling photos, my main focus is on capturing the bond between them in a natural and gentle way.

What Siblings Should Wear for Newborn Photoshoots

I ask parents to bring simple, solid-coloured outfits. It’s best to avoid patterns and bold prints so the photos look clean and timeless.

If siblings are coming, I ask them to arrive dressed and ready. I usually start with sibling and family photos first, as young children don’t stay focused for very long in the studio.

I aim to finish sibling and family photos within the first 30 minutes. After that, if you live nearby, family members can head home or take a break while I continue with the newborn session and focus on the baby.

Safety During Newborn and Sibling Photoshoot

Safety is always the top priority during newborn sessions—without exception. Every pose is done carefully and gently, and there is never any rushing. The baby’s comfort and safety always come first.

I always ask for both parents to be involved. One parent can stay close to the sibling, while the other helps keep a close eye on the baby. This is especially important with siblings under four years old, as their reactions can be unpredictable.

Sibling Portrait Tips

Capture a mix of shots—siblings looking at the camera and interacting with the newborn.

Use simple games like peek-a-boo or silly tricks (e.g. balancing a toy on your head) to get natural smiles.

Keep a few favourite sweets on hand for extra motivation if needed.

For cuddling shots, keep the baby’s nappy on to avoid any accidents.
